Education and Care

Williams Giles is well used to acting as a hands-on adviser to companies in the education, charity and care sectors- both during the early stages of setting up, and in assisting as the business grows and develops. Our education and care sector directors, Alastair Crawford, and Alyson Howard  advise  many of the new school academies across the South East both pre and post conversion, on the current and changing issues facing their management teams and act as auditors for a portfolio of over twenty schools.

Alastair was also lead adviser on the creation of the first independent fostering agency in the UK and was a founding trustee of the local children’s hospice Demelza House.

Our services include:

  • Advice on Academy conversion for schools
  • Services to private and charitable schools
  • Academy School and Charity Audits
  • Charity-compliant statutory accounts
  • Advice for trading charities
  • Tax efficient fund raising
  • VAT advice and mitigation

New School Academies

Business and accounting systems consulting

Working in a new legal framework can be overwhelming and can detract from getting the day job done. We can provide active support to the board to help set up systems that account for, and operate, all aspects of the business, and can produce Charities Act compliant records and statutory accounts.

Audit and year end

Business systems and processes are scrutinised and interrogated so that the audit is not just a compliance necessity but offers real added value.

Capital expenditure planning

Managing large capital projects and navigating issues such as VAT, fundraising and legal structure are all part of our service. Growing not-for-profit care and education based businesses requires a specialist set of skills and Williams Giles’ client base reflects the success of these services over many years.

Payroll

Our efficient and cost-effective payroll team can run any size of payroll, leaving the management team to concentrate on running the business.

Randstad Education recently invited 50 head teachers, governors and school business managers, to a seminar with three key figures to discuss the current financial, governance and educational issues around academisation – particularly with austerity measures starting to bite.

Alyson Howard who heads up our academies team at Williams Giles specialising in advising schools on academy conversion addressed the financial, governance and educational implications of converting to academy status with over 1300 academies now established across the UK and another 700 in the pipeline, academisation is one of the hottest and most contentious topics in education. Whether the main objective is to raise standards, increase resourcing or simply take control of every aspect of running a school as an effective business, there are few schools not contemplating what it all might mean for them.

The venue for the breakfast briefing was the ocean going Clipper ship the Stad Amsterdam, moored at West India Dock. Built as a joint venture with the City of Amsterdam, its construction provided valuable work experience for unemployed youngsters under Randstad’s Finding Jobs For People programme.
